Five Things To Think About When You Are Choosing Accessories
September 30, 2013
By Interior Designer Tamara Scott-Anderson, ASID
Accessories are the finishing touches that complete a room, just as the necklace and earrings make the outfit. Here are five things you should consider when displaying existing accessories or choosing new accessories for your room.
Use accessories to accomplish design element principles. They can be used to introduce color, texture, balance, and even create a theme. For example, displaying a collection of a masks or baskets could convey an ethnic theme. The throw pillows on your sofa can bring in texture and color.
Next, think about size and scale with relationship to the furniture. Does it look dinky or too big where you are placing the item? Small paintings or photos should not be hung higher than eye level if you want to be able to see the subject matter. A large wall would be better with larger artwork or mirrors instead of a grouping of small pieces. The size of a lamp should not over power the table it is sitting on or be so small that it seems insignificant.
Know when to quit adding accessories or when to put things away. Rotate items during different times of the year to avoid a cluttered look. You do not need to have all 89 cat sculptures you own on display at the same time. Also, tell your friends that your collection has maxed out and there is no need to buy them for you any more.
Create groupings of items to create visual interest. Layering and overlapping gives a depth and richness. Arranging your books on a shelf, with framed photos and small objects in between and in front, gives the layered effect.
Get a design professional to help. Whether you have an interior designer come to your home or you go shopping, be prepared with photographs, color swatches and measurements of the area you are working on.
